Frank Turner and the Sleeping Souls (Oklahoma City, Oklahoma 6/1/16)
The stage right before the set started.
That was a blast, I'm still giddy...
They were in red light for the beginning of the set. Does that mean they were eliminated? (@midnight reference, so if you got that then, Points!)
I've had the opportunity to see Frank Turner in concert 4 times. (Just him and Matt Nasir in Kansas City, Missouri in June of 2014, the full band twice in 2015 in Boulder, Colorado (October) and Kansas City, Missouri (December), and now this time.) But this was my first chance to photograph his show.
I was allowed in the photo pit for the first three songs of the night, which in this case happened to be "I Still Believe", "The Next Storm", and "The Road". And I guess from my (limited) knowledge of concert photography, with a signed artist, three songs seems to be the norm that a photo pass gets you. But as you can tell I was still able to take a great handful of photos in just under 10 minutes (I believe I got 413 photos in total).
No more red light!
To my surprise I was the only photographer in the pit, but that meant I had a chance to get to each side of the stage quickly and easily without running into other photographers shots. (I know it won't always be like that so I kinda got a lucky break on my first major photo taking). The security staff was extremely nice to me. All I had to do to get in the pit was show my red photo wristband and they let me in. I told them I would do my best to stay crouched down so I wasn't in people's way, and to that they said, "It doesn't matter, stand in front of them all you want."
Once "The Road" was over, I quickly excused myself from the photo pit and squeezed back through the crowd up to my mom who was holding my spot at the barrier. The crowd was very nice about letting me get back to her so I could put my camera away and enjoy the rest of the concert.
Someone's a bit jumpy...
After Frank's set was over, we got out of the GA crowd, bought matching shirts (because we're cheesy), and headed outside and over to the buses. Which we waited outside for probably an hour or so, and during that time we met all of the Sleeping Souls and Frank as well. Photos of that are here on my personal twitter.
Overall it was an extremely fun night and I'm glad we made the 5 hour trip to come.
One of my favourite photos of the night
Frank Turner and the Sleeping souls consists of Frank Turner, Ben Lloyd, Matt Nasir, Tarrant Anderson, and Nigel Powell.
